Monsanto Looks to Sell Dairy Hormone Business  → nytimes.com

YAY CONSUMERS! SPEAK UP WITH YOUR VOICES AND YOUR $$. YOU WILL BE HEARD.

By ANDREW MARTIN and ANDREW POLLACK

Published: August 6, 2008

After struggling to gain consumer acceptance, Monsanto on Wednesday announced that it would try to sell its business of producing an artificial growth hormone for dairy cows. The company will focus instead on its thriving business of selling seeds and developing ways to improve crops.

The decision comes as more retailers, saying they are responding to consumer demand, are selling dairy products from cows not treated with the artificial hormone.

Wal-Mart, Kroger and Publix are among the retailers that now sell house-brand milk from untreated cows. Almost all of the fresh milk sold by Dean Foods, the nation’s largest milk bottler, also comes from cows that were not treated with the artificial hormone, a spokeswoman said.

The growth hormone, approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 1993, was one of the first applications of genetic engineering used in food production. When the artificial hormone, which is made in genetically modified bacteria, is injected into cows, it increases milk production by about a gallon a day. A 2007 survey by the Department of Agriculture said 17 percent of the nation’s dairy cows were receiving it.

Despite the government’s approval, many advocacy groups have long maintained that Posilac is bad for the health of cows. Some even claim it could pose a cancer risk in people, though little scientific evidence has emerged to support that view. Their concerns have been fueled by the refusal of many countries, including Canada and members of the European Union, to permit the use of the hormone.

“I think they saw the handwriting on the wall and gave up,” said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director of the Center for Food Safety, a consumer advocacy group based in Washington. “It’s a major victory for consumers.”

Mr. Kimbrell said the original idea of marketing a growth hormone for milk production was flawed because milk is so emblematic of childhood. Fear of the effects of the artificial hormone was one of the primary drivers behind the growth of the organic dairy industry, he said.

Monsanto’s announcement comes after a year of pitched battles over labeling on dairy packages. A year ago, Monsanto tried unsuccessfully to persuade federal officials to crack down on labels that say the milk has been produced without the hormone, arguing that milk from treated cows was the same as that from untreated cows.

In the months since, a Monsanto-backed advocacy group and a handful of dairy organizations have struggled to have similar laws or regulations passed at the state level. In Pennsylvania, for instance, the secretary of agriculture banned the labels, only to have his order overturned by the governor amid a consumer uproar.

Monsanto will continue to sell and market the product until a buyer is found, said Christie Chavis, who leads commercial development and strategy for the company’s animal agriculture business unit. Posilac is sold in 20 countries. (whos gonna buy this shit? no one. so they will continue to manufacture it. why? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)

“Food: The Ultimate Secret Exposed”  → infowars.com

Once again, the power of alternative media has prevailed over the whitewash of corporate media’s obsession with celebrity drama and unimportant sports discussion.

In a special video, Alex Jones addresses one of the darkest modes of power the globalists have used to control the population– food. The adulteration of the planet’s staple crops, genetically-altered species and intentionally-altered water, food and air all amount to a Eugenics operation to weaken the masses and achieve full spectrum domination.

People the world over, but especially in the United States are under chemical attack. Deadly and dangerous toxins ranging from Aspartame to Fluoride, GMO, Mercury-tainting, pesticides, cross-species chimeras, plastic compounds in chicken, high fructose corn syrup, cloned meat, rBGH and new aggressive GM species of salmon have all entered into our diets and environments– whether we want it or not.

Many of these substances knowingly cause or are linked with sterility, low birth weight, miscarriages, smaller or deformed offspring, as well as organ failure, cancer, brain tumors and Death itself, what you DON’T know about on your grocery shelves can hurt you. Further, Alex demonstrates that a pattern of buried studies, fraudulent statistics and a will reduce global population all point to the deliberate criminal poisoning of the food and water supply.

Solar-powered process could decrease carbon dioxide to pre-industrial levels in 10 years → physorg.com

selva:

mohandasgandhi:

By using the sun’s visible light and heat to power an electrolysis cell that captures and converts carbon dioxide from the air, a new technique could impressively clean the atmosphere and produce fuel feedstock at the same time. The key advantage of the new solar carbon capture process is that it simultaneously uses the solar visible and solar thermal components, whereas the latter is usually regarded as detrimental due to the degradation that heat causes to photovoltaic materials. However, the new method uses the sun’s heat to convert more solar energy into carbon than either photovoltaic or solar thermal processes alone.

The new process, called Solar Thermal Electrochemical Photo (STEP) carbon capture, was recently suggested theoretically by a team of scientists from George Washington University and Howard University, both in Washington, DC. Now, in a paper just published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters, the scientists have experimentally demonstrated the STEP process for the first time.

“The significance of the study is twofold,” Stuart Licht, a chemistry professor at George Washington University, told PhysOrg.com. “Carbon dioxide, a non-reactive and normally difficult-to-remove compound, can be easily captured with solar energy using our new low-energy, lithium carbonate electrolysis STEP process, and with scale-up, sufficient resources exist for STEP to decrease carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere to pre-industrial levels within 10 years.”

As the scientists explain, the process uses visible sunlight to power an electrolysis cell for splitting carbon dioxide, and also uses solar thermal energy to heat the cell in order to decrease the energy required for this conversion process. The electrolysis cell splits carbon dioxide into either solid carbon (when the reaction occurs at temperatures between 750°C and 850°C) or carbon monoxide (when the reaction occurs at temperatures above 950°C). These kinds of temperatures are much higher than those typically used for carbon-splitting electrolysis reactions (e.g., 25°C), but the advantage of reactions at higher temperatures is that they require less energy to power the reaction than at lower temperatures.

The STEP process is the first and only method that incorporates both visible and thermal energy from the sun for carbon capture. Radiation from the full solar spectrum - including heat - is not usually considered an advantage in solar technologies due to heat’s damage to photovoltaics. Even in the best solar cells, a large part of sunlight is discarded as intrinsically insufficient to drive solar cells as it is sub-bandgap, and so it is lost as waste heat.

By showing how to take advantage of both the sun’s heat and light for capturing and splitting carbon dioxide, the STEP process is fundamentally capable of converting more solar energy than either photovoltaic or solar thermal processes alone. The experiments in this study showed that the technique could capture carbon dioxide and convert it into carbon with a solar efficiency from 34% to 50%, depending on the thermal component. While carbon could be stored, the production of carbon monoxide could later be used to synthesize jet, kerosene, and diesel fuels, with the help of hydrogen generated by STEP water splitting.

“We are exploring the STEP generation of synthetic jet fuel and synthetic diesel,” Licht said, “and in addition to carbon capture, we are developing STEP processes to generate the staples predicted in our original theory, such as a variety of metals and bleach.”

What a break for U.S. corporations, such as Monsanto. The important information about Iraqi Order 81 is that it was designed to have a major impact on the way farming is done in Iraq. This order prohibits Iraqi farmers from using saving seeds from one year to the next. (MonsterSatan=Monsanto)ha → corpwatch.org

On August 8, 2005 Reuters reported that the Iraqi seed supply is at risk. Below is an excerpt from the Reuters report.

“… The war in Iraq destroyed the country’s seed industry, putting the country’s domestic food supply at risk, the United Nations food agency said on Monday as it appealed for aid to rebuild farming.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation said it needed $5.4 million to help the agriculture ministry rebuild a seed industry destroyed by the fighting and looting.

“Iraq had a relatively stable and functioning public-sector-controlled seed industry before the war in 2003. After the war, research and seed production facilities have greatly deteriorated,” FAO said in a statement.

Iraq can now cover only 4 percent of its demand for quality seeds from its own resources….

If no immediate action is taken, serious seed shortages can be expected in the near future, threatening the country’s food security….”

How convenient…perfect timing. What a break for U.S. corporations, such as Monsanto. First outlaw the seeds and then destroy them, or did it happen the other way around. Were the seeds destroyed first and then outlawed? This news story has thus far received very little attention.

The news story about the Iraqi Orders has been virtually ignored by the U.S. press. Order 81 is just one of 100 Orders that have been imposed on the people of Iraq by the U.S. government. These orders are sometimes referred to as the Bremmer Orders. No one in the U.S. or Iraq was ever allowed to cast a vote in the ballot box for any of these Orders. This says a lot about the kind of democracy that the U.S. is imposing on the people of Iraq.

The important information about Iraqi Order 81 is that it was designed to have a major impact on the way farming is done in Iraq. This order prohibits Iraqi farmers from using the methods of agriculture that they have used for centuries. The practice of saving seeds from one year to the next is now illegal in Iraq. Order 81 wages war on Iraqi farmers. They have lost the freedom to choose their own methods of agriculture. The legalese in which the orders are written creates confusion about their exact meaning, but the desired result is obvious. Order 81 prohibits the farmers from using their own seeds, on their own farms, to grow their own crops.

Prior to the U.S. invasion, agriculture in Iraq was flourishing. The Fertile Crescent had developed a system of farming that was the envy of the world. Now, under Occupation, centuries of progress have been destroyed, almost overnight.

The food chain has been under worldwide assault by U.S. corporations for some time now. The Master Race of corporations has seized control of the very essence of life itself. We are now in the age of Genetically Modified Doomsday Seeds. The USDA was complicit in the development of these bastard seeds.

This is not a new phenomenon. It has been a gradual takeover. Remember Percy Schmeiser, the Canadian farmer, who was sued by Monsanto? Not enough people stood up for Percey, so then they came for other farmers. In fact, Monsanto has sued so many farmers that a national hotline (1-888-FARMHLP) has now been set up to assist them.

Is it possible that Iraqi farmers think back fondly to the good old days before the Occupation and before Order 81? Even Saddam Hussein allowed them to save seeds for the next year’s crop. Is the Pentagon a worse master than Saddam?

Farmers and consumers around the world need to stand in solidarity with the farmers and consumers in Iraq. There is no one who contributes more to society than the farmer. At the top of that hierarchy is the organic farmer. Doctors, lawyers, plumbers, and factory workers make important contributions to society, but none would survive without the farmer.

Why did the U.S. destroy the seeds? Did the Pentagon mistake the seeds for bombs and WMD’s? Think of that as a headline for tomorrow’s paper, “CIA confuses pomegranate seeds with WMD’s.” This sounds like a comedy “headline” from the Leno show. If the survival of thousands of people was not an issue, we could all laugh at the absurdity of this saga. The propagandists will try to convince the world that the destruction of the Iraqi seeds was just a mistake, an accident of war…collateral damage. Iraqi Order 81 proves otherwise. Iraqi Order 81 is proof that the U.S. had a strategic plan which would insure that U.S. corporations would not have to compete with the Iraqi farmers. U.S. corporations don’t like competition. The idea of free markets is just a myth. The Predatory Capitalism of the U.S. could not survive without the threat of the military behind it.

Can it be denied that U.S. corporations are seeking total control of the food supply of the planet? After all of the seeds that are owned by farmers are destroyed, it will be necessary for the farmers to purchase them. Those most likely to profiteer are U.S. seed companies. General Smedley Butler was right. War is still a racket.

Imagine what would happen if there was a successful worldwide movement of resistance, an international Save the Seed Campaign. A source in Australia reports that a seed bank has been set up there. Every other nation must heed this warning and set up secure seed banks. It is not known what the U.S. government will do to eliminate this competition to U.S. seed corporations. Will the countries that institute seed banks be on a Pentagon hit list? Another possibility will be a covert CIA operation.

The U.S. policy of using food as a weapon of war shows a depraved, mind numbing level of cruelty. This has been referred to as the Ultimate War Crime. It is one of the most serious Crimes Against Humanity of our generation.

There is a hidden tragedy in this seed destruction policy of the U.S. The U.S. has not only endangered the entire population of Iraq but it has also shot each of its own citizens in the foot. Maybe it has rendered a fatal shot to our children and future generations. No one will ever know if any of the seeds, that have been destroyed during our war and occupation, would have produced plants that could have been used to prevent or cure disease. The seeds that have been lost can never be replaced.

Someday, in the distant future, maybe we will become more civilized. Then we will have monuments to honor farmers. We will have parades in celebration of farm workers. The era of glorification of war will just be a fading memory.

Experts: Health Hazards in Gulf Warrant Evacuations Thursday 22 July 2010 by: Rose Aguilar, t r u t h o u t | Report → truth-out.org

When Louisiana residents ask marine toxicologist and community activist Riki Ott what she would do if she lived in the Gulf with children, she tells them she would leave immediately. “It’s that bad. We need to start talking about who’s going to pay for evacuations.”

In late May, she began meeting people in the Gulf with symptoms like headaches, dizziness, sore throats, burning eyes, rashes and blisters that are so deep, they’re leaving scars. People are asking, “What’s happening to me?”

She says the culprit is almost two million gallons of Corexit, the dispersant BP is using to break up and hide the oil below the ocean’s surface. “It’s an industrial solvent. It’s a degreaser. It’s chewing up boat engines off-shore. It’s chewing up dive gear on-shore. Of course it’s chewing up people’s skin. The doctors are saying the solvents are making the oil worse.”

click link for full article

On Tuesday, Mother Jones’ Kate Sheppard reported that Hugh Kaufman, a whistleblower who works as a senior policy analyst in the EPA’s Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response, is accusing the agency of deliberately downplaying public health threats and its own role in regulating the chemicals being dumped into the Gulf “to protect itself from liability and keep the public from getting too alarmed.”

The cause for alarm can’t be more apparent. In addition to the health problems people are already experiencing, WKRG News 5 reporter Jessica Taloney recently collected samples of water and sand from five Alabama beaches and took them to a local lab to be tested.

Bob Naman, a chemist with nearly 30 years of experience, told Taloney that he wouldn’t expect to see more than five parts per million of oil and petroleum in the water. The sample of the water taken in Gulf Shores beach, where adults and kids were swimming and playing, showed 66 parts per million. The sand had 211 parts per million. When Naman began to test the sample collected from Dauphin Island Marina, it exploded. “We think that it mostly likely happened due to the presence of methanol or methane gas or the presence of the dispersant, Corexit.”

“What’s going on in the Gulf is the same cover-up that was going with the 9/11 environmental issue,” the EPA’s Kaufman told Sheppard. “The Bush White House ordered EPA to lie about the environmental and public health situation at the World Trade Center because of economic ramifications. So they did.”

Former shrimper Diane Wilson hopes to see more direct action. “This is a crisis. If this oil gusher does not move people to force a change in Washington, then it will never happen. We are seeing the end of the United States as we know it. If people hold their planet dear, they better be out there. Folks are too well behaved. We need to be unreasonable.”

US Lawmakers Want to Criminalize Whistleblower Sites Over TSA Leak From WikiLeaks Jump to: navigation, search December 12, 2009 By Drew Wilson (ZeroPaid → wikileaks.org

After the embarrassing Transport Security Administration (TSA) leak where workers failed to properly redact documents related to screening procedures, three Republican lawmakers want to criminalize whistle blower sites that reposted the document. The question here is, if successful, could that set the stage for other documents such as the leaked ACTA documents?

It’s been a long and winding road for the leaked TSA document story and it all started with a blogger discovering that a TSA document failed to properly redact a document that was posted online by the TSA. Essentially, the TSA posted a screening document while drawing black boxes over text that was to be redacted. Unfortunately, even in PDF format, the redacted text is not erased and one can uncover that text simply by copying and pasting it in any text editors.

The story hit BoingBoing and several other sites, making it one of the most talked about stories this week. It turns out, not only was it bad that the documents redacted sections weren’t properly redacted, but it was bad that the document was posted at all. So it’s no surprise

By Wednesday, the TSA said that 5 workers were put on leave as a result of the incident. It seemed as though the issues were being worked out at that point.

Given the repressed nature of the documents, it’s no surprise that the documents wound up on whistle blower sites like Wikileaks and Cryptome. It seemed like the wisest decision was to not attract any more attention to the documents. After all, the TSA did say that the documents were “outdated” and thus suggesting that it’s really a non-issue. So you’d think the issue was pretty much over save for some behind the scenes issues that needed to be dealt with.

No, let’s remind ourselves that there are lawmakers in this country that don’t have a clue about how the internet works. According to Threat Level, three Republican lawmakers are gunning to regulate whistle blowing sites over this document. From the report:

In their letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano (.pdf) on Wednesday, Reps. Peter T. King (R – New York), Charles Dent (R – Pennsylvania) and Gus Bilirakis (R – Florida) asked, “How has the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration addressed the repeated reposting of this security manual to other websites, and what legal action, if any, can be taken to compel its removal?”

These Republicans are apparently seeking criminal repercussions for sites that repost the documents. Apparently, they have forgotten that even congress tried to intervene on behalf of record labels by tabling the DMCA in hopes that it would help stem the flow of file-sharing – which it did not. How can they expect a different result with this leaked document? After all, Wikileaks is hosted in at least a dozen counties, so how can congress even hope to stop the flow of this document?

Moreover, if this is an attempt to regulate whistle blowers, is that effectively trying to stop anyone on the inside from leaking something that could be much more imporant for public debate? Are these Republicans now, in effect, against public debate of certain topics? Let’s take in to account that ACTA was exposed through unauthorized repeated leaks where someone felt that the internal documents really should have been a topic for public debate. If sites are now criminally liable, given that the Obama administration has said that ACTA is a matter of national security and can’t release the ACTA documents officially, for exposing any documents deemed a national security issue, wouldn’t those sites simply move off shore if they still have ties in the US? Not only is this a futile attempt to stop the spread of the TSA leak, but it’s also an ill-conceived idea on many different angles – the Streisand effect being only one of those angles.

Washington Wakes Up by Stephen Hershey  → realitysandwich.com

The Washington Post made a surprise announcement on Monday, July 19th with the launch of “Top Secret America,” an ongoing investigation into the irregular growth of national security since the 9/11 attacks. According to the editors, they fear that security corporations have escalated to becoming a “fourth branch of government,” that the existing branches are struggling to control.

Top Secret America contains disclosed information and maps based on two years of research, each data point confirmed by at least two public sources. Interestingly, a tweet was made on July 17th by Wikileaks, stating “Real change begins Monday in the WashPost. By the years end, a reformation. Lights on. Rats out.”

Death Threat: The Widening Gyre‏ by Alan Grayson ~Thu Jul 22, 2010 at 10:51:41 AM PDT → dailykos.com

One day, a Republican operative offers $100 to anyone who’ll punch me in the nose.

The next day, I get a death threat.

After Fox News spewed its usual clownish hatred about me yesterday, my office received a call. The caller told our receptionist - a young intern - that “10 people are going to kill the Congressman within 24 hours.” We gave the information to the Capitol Police; they are investigating.

Fox. You’d think that they would have learned their lesson after Dr. George Tiller was killed. And they did learn a lesson: a lesson in killing.

And why? Because I told the truth: the truth that by stalling on unemployment insurance, right-wingers revealed themselves to be heartless, selfish wretches, who have been taking food out of the mouths of children.

Jul 22, 20104 notes
“The United States political and monetary authorities have lost ALL credibility in the eyes of the world ever since the crisis hit and for very good reason. The main reason we are still held on life support is so that China can go out and buy up all of the world’s resources while the dollar still has value (and they allow us to bury ourselves) and we have a strong military. We can see the loss of credibility in the fact that we went to the G20 talking about more stimulus and were rebuffed. So when the crisis first hit all other nations defended our system and currency but now I think all nations are going to focus on what is best for them and believe me it will NOT be what is best for us. China has already slowed itself down materially to deal with its irresponsible housing bubble but based on comments recently from authorities it is clear that they are committed to stimulating domestic consumption. Furthermore, while the yuan has only strengthened slightly since they changed policy let’s not forget that it HAS strengthened. While they are proceeding cautiously, this was a change of policy. So to summarize I see a world emerging over the next few months where other nations publicly talk a nice game about the U.S. and its importance but in reality talks will go on behind our back as to how to gracefully cut the cord. Any cutting of the cord would reflect itself in a decoupling trade in my view. Unfortunately, politicians in the U.S. will never admit that they are the reason we are in this mess so they will likely start a war or create some other event (cyber attack to shutdown the internet?). This is precisely why I call on all Americans right now to refuse to get involved in a war. This would be a war to defend our empire plain and simple. We do not need an empire. China needs an empire to feed itself and to provide energy. We are the most blessed large nation on earth as far as land, agriculture and water resources. Plus we have a brilliant social document called the Constitution that the vast majority of Americans would die to defend if necessary against whoever would threaten it. Let’s just get our acts together here and not fall for the trap that I see being set. Also, remember that if the authorities are about to lose control of the precious metals and oil market the best thing for them to do would be to start a conflict so the rise can be blamed on that. If you haven’t learned that Washington D.C is not to be trusted by now I do not know what it will take.” —Michael Krieger (via poortaste)

Blond-Haired, Blue-Eyed Girl Born to Parents With Black Skin → foxnews.com

Evolution just laughed in the face of heritage and racism. We are all ONE.

A black British couple told Tuesday of their amazement after their baby girl was born white, with blue eyes and blonde hair.

Doctors say baby Nmachi Ihegboro is not an albino and attribute her appearance to an unknown genetic mutation.

Nmachi, whose name means “Beauty of God” in the Nigerian couple’s homeland, has confused genetics experts because neither of her parents has any mixed-race family history.

Dad Ben Ihegboro said, “The first thing I said, was ‘What the flip?’ We both just sat there after the birth staring at her for ages — not saying anything. She doesn’t look like an albino child anyway — not like the ones I’ve seen back in Nigeria or in books. She just looks like a healthy white baby.”

He added, “My mum is a black Nigerian, although she has a bit fairer skin than mine. But we don’t know of any white ancestry. We wondered if it was a genetic twist. But even then, what is with the long curly blonde hair?”

Ben Ihegboro was quick to quell any murmurings of foul play, saying, “My wife is true to me. Even if she hadn’t been, the baby still wouldn’t look like that.”

Mom Angela Ihegboro admitted that she was “speechless” when she first saw her baby girl, who was delivered by C-section.”

I thought, ‘What is this little doll?’ She’s beautiful, and I love her. Her color doesn’t matter. She’s a miracle baby. But still, what on earth happened here?” she said.

Nmachi is now at home in Woolwich, southeastern London, with siblings Chisom and Dumebi.
